Why contractors look for FIELDBOSS alternatives

FIELDBOSS runs field service and accounting for elevator contractors on Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Business Central. Its Capterra rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 reviews. The reasons contractors give for looking elsewhere are public:

  • A large platform. FIELDBOSS runs on Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Business Central (elevator page). A contractor not already on them takes on a large system.
  • The learning curve. One Capterra reviewer writes that “The most difficult thing about FieldBoss is the learning curve”; others mention the effort of implementation and data migration (Capterra reviews).
  • No free trial. Capterra shows no free trial; FIELDBOSS offers a demo instead (Capterra).

The same reviewers praise its elevator-industry knowledge and fast support. Their complaints are about the effort of a large system.

Who should stay on FIELDBOSS

Switching takes time and carries risk. Stay on FIELDBOSS if most of these are true:

  • Your accounting lives in Business Central. FIELDBOSS shares one data model between field operations and financials. None of the alternatives below says it runs on Business Central; LiftKeeper mentions connecting to Microsoft Dynamics, which links two separate systems.
  • You bill modernization and construction work with AIA billing, retainage and change orders, which FIELDBOSS builds in.
  • You rely on automatic Cat 1 and Cat 5 due dates, generated from the last completed test (FIELDBOSS blog).
  • Your team already knows the system. Switching means training everyone again.

Five alternatives

Four are built for elevator contractors. The fifth, BuildOps, is general commercial field service software. It is included as the closest match for a contractor on FIELDBOSS who runs other trades alongside elevators and uses a large accounting system.

1. LiftAuth Our product

Best for: independents who want building manager apps and a trial before they sign
Built for
Elevator contractors only. So far it is used by elevator contractors in Singapore, and by none in the US.
Platform & mobile
Standalone cloud platform. Technician app for iOS and Android that works offline for most of the work, with sync. Building Managers get the LiftAuth Building Manager app and a web app, free.
Elevator-specific features
Annual inspections: every elevator’s next due date in one list. The Auditor (the witnessing agency) picks an hour from your Team’s calendar, and the Building Manager agrees to it. Maintenance Contracts create the visits, Issues are logged with photo and video, and Fault Analytics (Pro) breaks faults down by building, manufacturer, model and age. No DOB NOW filing, no project or AIA billing.
Free trial
2 weeks, with your own elevators loaded.
Reviews
Not yet listed on review sites.

LiftAuth is a smaller system than FIELDBOSS, and you can try it before you sign. You give up Business Central accounting and project billing.

2. Forz

Best for: keeping Cat 1 / Cat 5 scheduling
Built for
Field service companies in mechanical trades, fire safety and vertical transportation, with a page for elevator contractors.
Platform & mobile
iOS and Android apps that keep working with no signal. Two-way QuickBooks Online sync.
Elevator-specific features
Cat 1 annual and Cat 5 five-year tests on the same car (framed as ASME A17.1 / CSA B44); your jurisdiction’s inspection as its own type; Maintenance Control Program records; recurring maintenance jobs; callbacks and modernization projects.
Free trial
Not mentioned. Free demo.
Reviews
No Capterra or G2 listing found.

Forz is the closest match to FIELDBOSS on test scheduling. Accounting moves to QuickBooks Online.

3. LiftKeeper

Best for: an elevator-only vendor that can connect to Microsoft Dynamics
Built for
The elevator industry only. Headquartered in Sandpoint, Idaho; part of Advanced Business Technologies, founded in 1990.
Platform & mobile
Runs in a web browser on a computer, phone or tablet. A native app or offline use is not stated publicly on its site.
Elevator-specific features
Trouble calls and routes on a map; proposals converted to jobs; automated contract billing; parts inventory; custom reports; unlimited free customer portal users; an answering-service login. Inspection and Cat 1 / Cat 5 features are not stated on its own site.
Free trial
Not mentioned. Demo on request.
Reviews
No Capterra, G2 or GetApp listing found.

Its FAQ says its team can interface with QuickBooks, Intacct or Microsoft Dynamics. That helps if you leave FIELDBOSS and keep your ledger. Ask how its browser-based app works without signal.

4. ElevatorPlus

Best for: maintenance-contract tracking from an elevator-only vendor
Built for
Elevator businesses of any size. Made by Accucia Softwares in Pune, India, which claims 200+ elevator businesses in 20+ countries.
Platform & mobile
Hosted on Amazon AWS. Apps on Google Play and the App Store, with offline use.
Elevator-specific features
Maintenance-contract reminders and renewal tracking; GPS dispatch; quotations; customer portal and inspection management pages. No US code references found on its site.
Free trial
Yes, following a demo call. Most customers live within 2–7 days, it says.
Reviews
Listed on Capterra with 0 reviews.

ElevatorPlus is built for elevator businesses and offers a trial after a demo call. Nothing on its site mentions US codes or US customers, so ask for references.

5. BuildOps

Best for: commercial contractors where elevators are one trade among several
Built for
Commercial contractors, 1,500+ of them across North America, it says. The trades on its site are HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire & life safety and refrigeration; elevators are not among them.
Platform & mobile
Web platform and a technician app for iPhone, iPad and Android that works offline.
Elevator-specific features
None stated on its current site.
Free trial
Capterra shows none.
Reviews
Capterra: 4.4 / 5 from 177 reviews.

We chose BuildOps over Method and ServiceTitan because it targets commercial contractors. It integrates with Viewpoint, Sage Intacct, NetSuite and QuickBooks, which suits a contractor on FIELDBOSS who also runs HVAC or other trades. An elevator-only firm would set up test cycles itself.

Our best elevator maintenance software list covers ten tools, including Method, Fieldy and ServiceTitan.

How to switch

  1. Read your agreement first. Find the notice period and renewal date for FIELDBOSS and for any Microsoft licenses you pay for separately, so you don’t pay for two systems longer than you need to.
  2. Decide where accounting goes. If your general ledger lives in Business Central, choose whether it stays there or moves, and how invoices from the new system reach it. This is the biggest decision in the move.
  3. Export your data. This includes:
    • buildings and elevators
    • contracts and Building Manager contacts
    • open work orders and open quotes
    • unpaid invoices
    • parts inventory
  4. Export every test date separately. For each elevator, export the last and next date of the Cat 1, periodic inspection and Cat 5 (and Cat 3 for water-hydraulic units). If your new system doesn’t track one of these cycles, keep it somewhere you’ll check.
  5. Carry over open violations and defects with their inspection dates, so correction deadlines don’t reset or disappear. In NYC, see defect deadlines.
  6. Avoid switching in December. In New York City, Cat 1 tests must be done by December 31; a migration in the last weeks of the year puts your busiest period at risk.
  7. Run both systems in parallel for a few weeks. Before you turn the old one off, complete live jobs and invoices in the new system, and book at least one witness through it.
  8. Bring your technicians in early. Have them install the app and fill in a form in a machine room with no signal. Check that sign-off works.
  9. Tell your Building Managers. If the new system has an app or portal for them, invite them once the data is right.

Questions

What are the best alternatives to FIELDBOSS?

For elevator contractors, the closest alternatives are LiftAuth (our product), Forz, LiftKeeper and ElevatorPlus. LiftAuth has building manager apps and a 2-week trial, and Forz schedules Cat 1 and Cat 5 tests. LiftKeeper is elevator-only with a free customer portal, and ElevatorPlus offers a trial after a demo call. BuildOps suits commercial contractors that run several trades.

Which FIELDBOSS alternative tracks Cat 1 and Cat 5 tests?

Forz describes scheduling Cat 1 annually and Cat 5 every five years on the same unit. LiftAuth tracks each elevator’s next inspection due date, and the witnessing agency, added as an Auditor, books its own time. The others don’t state Cat 1 or Cat 5 features on their own sites.

Can I keep Business Central if I leave FIELDBOSS?

LiftKeeper’s FAQ says its team can interface with Microsoft Dynamics, QuickBooks or Intacct. Forz syncs with QuickBooks Online, and BuildOps lists Viewpoint, Sage Intacct, NetSuite and QuickBooks. Ask any vendor to show the Business Central connection working before you commit.

Try LiftAuth on your own elevators
